They have a vivid scarlet blossom which looks like tiny flames. They tend to grow to great heights, reaching as tall as three feet, with huge blooms that can be up to a foot in diameter, in addition to smaller blooms on the side. They have often been described as looking like a cauliflower. When preparing to sow the seeds, make sure that you properly prepare your soil. Use a shovel or garden spade to turn and loosen the soil, and plant the seeds around a quarter inch deep. Wait until they’re 2-3 leaves high, and then thin the area by transplanting. There should be around 10 inches between the separate plants. After transplanting, be sure to water the plants well to make sure they continue to thrive. They tend to be heat tolerant, and also drought tolerant, making them great additions to gardens in a dry summer climate. However, when the weather is cool, they do tend to flower sooner. Therefore, they are known as being annual flowers, because they will grow regardless of the weather conditions.
